Remember the First Day Always
To
Reach the Last Day in Office
Matriculation - the tenth class was a big thing during forties and
fifties and those with first class-more than sixty percent marks were considered
intelligent. Sixties & seventies were years of graduates. Eighties &
nineties belonged to specialists-engineers, doctors, hotel management,
architects, business administration and so on. In 21st century we
want super intelligent persons with command over humanities as well as science
coupled with artificial intelligence the computers. Prior to thirties middle
pass or a grasp at reading and writing was good enough to get job of a clerk.
This is how people prepared themselves for a livelihood where education was
required.
Then starts the process, running about competitions- written &
oral – liked not liked- in India or abroad- viva-voce- interview-medical
tests-modern avatar of online interview-personality tests-even your face
beautiful/handsome. That is paraphernalia through which one has to pass before
he gets a pass - the appointment letter to enter a premises-shop, workshop, office,
MNC, Dafter, a plant, secretariat, training academy etc. to earn his first
rupee with a feeling “I have earned it.”: always reluctant to part with it.
A prudent tries to ensure there is no error on his part on the
first day: he has the pride and fear too: behaves in very sensible manner: it
is place of his dreams: goes to administration branch supervisor shy enough to
speak even the audible: speaks twice thrice to get a positive nod: Sir raises his
head to say yes and he hands over his appointment order: is directed to the
dealing. He goes to the dealing hand who is too busy to pay attention: only
after sometime he is offered a seat and asked what is required. He tells that
supervisor has directed him for seeking allotment to Branch: the dealing hand
takes the appointment order after taking out case file goes out of the room and
returns only after 10-15 minutes when one waits patiently. He hands over a set
of proformas to be signed at places marked in pencil and the new recruit signs
and gives back with a few minutes even without reading or asking for as to what
is being got signed and one of form says that his service can be terminated
within a period one year without assigning any reasons. Such an important paper
is signed without obtaining knowledge as to what it is. The dealing hand
obtains the orders of the supervisor and hands over the allotment slip; directs
him to a particular Branch; he asks for the room numbers and goes away. Now the
man runs to the room where action lies. Again goes to the head who directs him
to a particular table and tells sit quietly that they will talk later. It is
now lunch times. On return from lunch called by the supervisor; offered a cup
of tea and allotment of work order commonly called Distribution of Work among
dealing hands (DOW) also briefs him about his responsibilities and duties. He
express his resolve to do his best to perform the duties assigned. Arranges his
papers and files. The day is over: tomorrow is not the first day of service.
Many a times new recruits are sent to a training class or an academy
for training as to the rules and regulations. It is always a on the job
training for the job portfolio and it is the immediate boss who plays an
important role.
Just analyze the first day: the man has lot of pride as he got the
appointment after a hard competition; feels good to be part of that
organization; is submissive, patient, respectful, listens carefully, speaks
slowly, has the desire to move and is obedient. He is not annoyed when the
dealing hand goes out of the room for 10-15 minutes perhaps thinks that he has
more important work to attend. He signs important papers without reading in his
anxiety to grab the task. Another view is: he is more interested in work than
the formalities which have to be completed before he is offered the work to be
done. He is pure, not interested in anything else, exhibits all qualities of a
good worker
Another important thing about this relationship is: that it is a
formal relationship which is based on two things that the employer wanted some
job to be done for a price-the wages and you offered your services for that
price. If these bases of the relationship are disturbed by either; the other
gets the right to terminate the relationship at any time he like subject to
some formalities. When one joins as an officer he has to be more careful. You
must respect all those even at the lowest level with whom you are working
because they would guide you to the intricacies of the job.
Consistency in behavior; understandings formal nature of the relationship
that would be the stepping stone for his advancement in life
and reaching the last day in office or job when he would be sent home
with a bouquet.
